A comparative analysis of Alexandrium catenella/tamarense blooms in Annaba Bay (Algeria) and Thau lagoon (France); phosphorus limitation as a trigger ArchiMer
Hadjadji, Imene; Frehi, Hocine; Ayada, Lembarek; Abadie, Eric; Collos, Yves.
Environmental conditions ultimately leading to blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella/tamarense were investigated at two Mediterranean sites (Annaba Bay, Algeria and Thau lagoon, France). Three years were examined in details: 1992 (a pre-Alexandrium period), 2002 (a year with the first bloom in Annaba) and 2010 (a year with a major bloom in Annaba). Most conditions were similar, but ammonium concentrations were much higher in Annaba (up to 100 μM) than in Thau (up to 10 μM). First records of A. catenella/tamarense were in 1995 for Thau and 2002 for Annaba, and coincided with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) decreasing below a concentration of about 1 μM. No other environmental variable could be related to those blooms. Thus, it is likely...

Characterization of Lactobacillus from Algerian goat's milk based on phenotypic, 16S rDNA sequencing and their technological properties BJM
Marroki,Ahmed; Zúñiga,Manuel; Kihal,Mabrouk; Pérez-Martínez,Gaspar.
Nineteen strains of Lactobacillus isolated from goat's milk from farms in north-west of Algeria were characterized. Isolates were identified by phenotypic, physiological and genotypic methods and some of their important technological properties were studied. Phenotypic characterization was carried out by studying physiological, morphological characteristics and carbohydrate fermentation patterns using API 50 CHL system. Isolates were also characterized by partial 16S rDNA sequencing. Results obtained with phenotypic methods were correlated with the genotypic characterization and 13 isolates were identified as L. plantarum, two isolates as L. rhamnosus and one isolate as L. fermentum. Three isolates identified as L. plantarum by phenotypic characterization...

Habitat discrimination of big-scale sand smelt Atherina boyeri Risso, 1810 (Atheriniformes: Atherinidae) in eastern Algeria using somatic morphology and otolith shape ArchiMer
Boudinar, A. S.; Chaoui, L.; Mahe, Kelig; Cachera, M.; Kara, M. H..
Somatic morphology and otolith shape were used to discriminate four samples of Atherina boyeri from three different habitats: Mellah lagoon (n = 269), Annaba Gulf (144 punctuated and 194 unpunctuated individuals) and Ziama inlet (n = 147) in eastern Algeria. For each individual, somatic morphology was described with 13 metrics and eight meristic measurements, while the otolith contour shape of 452 individuals from the three habitats was analysed using Fourier analysis. Then, two discriminant analyses, one using the 13 metric measurements and the other using Fourier descriptors, were used in order to discriminate populations of A. boyeri. The results of the discriminant analyses based on the two methods were similar, and showed that this species could be...

Laïd,Y; Boutekdjiret,L; Oudjehane,R; Laraba-Djebari,F; Hellal,H; Guerinik,M; Griene,L; Alamir,B; Merad,R; Chippaux,JP.
Scorpion stings are a public health problem in the Maghreb region. In Algeria, epidemiological data were collected over the past twenty years by the Algerian health authorities. This study is an analysis of morbidity and mortality data collected from 2001 to 2010. Annual incidence and mortality due to scorpion envenoming were 152 ± 3.6 stings and 0.236 ± 0.041 deaths per 100,000 people (95% CI), respectively. The risk of being stung by a scorpion was dramatically higher in southern areas and central highlands due to environmental conditions. Incidence of envenoming was especially higher in the adult population, and among young males. In contrast, mortality was significantly higher among children under 15 years, particularly ages 1-4. Upper limbs were more...

Inventaire des proies ingérées par le marbré Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) (pisces : perciformes : sparidae) dans la baie d'Alger et d' Annaba ArchiMer
Harchouche, K; Maurin, C; Quero, Jean-claude.
At the time of a survey of the biology of Lithognathus mormyrus and its feeding ecology and dynamies, in the region of Algiers and Annaba, preys ingested by this species were determined from stomach contents. Food was composed entirely of benthic organisms. It has been counted more than 45 species-preys distributed in 9 taxonomic classes. The quantitative analysis of these preys and the variation of the food regime according to a certain number of parameters were treated. The young individuals fed on small Tellinids bivalves and adults, on Crustaceans Amphipods, Cumaceans, Decapodes, Molluscs, sea urchins and Polychaetes. The feeding of this fish was rich and varied in preys species and little among them were preferential. The three main sources of food...

Mass-transport deposits on the Algerian margin (Algiers area): morphology, lithology and sedimentary processes ArchiMer
Dan, Gabriela; Sultan, Nabil; Cattaneo, Antonio; Deverchere, J; Yelles, K.
On 21st May 2003, a damaging earthquake of Mw: 6.9 struck the region of Boumerdès 40 km east of Algiers in northern Algeria. The seismic shocks had devastating effects in the offshore area between the cities of Algiers and Dellys, where numerous cable breaks were observed. The submarine area encompassing the 2003 Boumerdès epicenter (central Algerian margin) was recently investigated using geophysical and sampling tools. It has been observed that small-size slides and mass-transport deposits occur across this area. Thus, a detailed analysis was performed on 25 submarine slides identified in water depth from 500 m to 2700 m, by measuring different morphological parameters (i.e. surface, head-scarp height, slope in the source area and in adjacent...

Ramdane, Zouhir; Trilles, Jean-paul; Mahe, Kelig; Amara, Rachid.
A total of 664 Boops Boops (Linnaeus, 1758) and 823 Mullus barbatus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758 from the east coast of Algeria were examined to study their parasitofauna. We collected eleven parasitic species (two monogeneans, three copepods, five isopods and one Branchiura) from B. boops, and four parasitic species (two copepods and two isopods) from M. barbatus barbatus. Five species were reported for the first time in Algeria. The site of attachment on the host and the degree of specificity varied according to the parasite species while the infestation rate changed according to the month and the host size. The parasitism did not show a significant negative impact on the biological parameters of the fish host.

Molecular characterization and epidemiology of cefoxitin resistance among Enterobacteriaceae lacking inducible chromosomal ampC genes from hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients in Algeria: description of new sequence type in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates BJID
Gharout-Sait,Alima; Touati,Abdelaziz; Guillard,Thomas; Brasme,Lucien; Champs,Christophe de.
In this study, 922 consecutive non-duplicate clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae obtained from hospitalized and non-hospitalized patients at Bejaia, Algeria were analyzed for AmpC-type β-lactamases production. The ampC genes and their genetic environment were characterized using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Plasmid incompatibility groups were determined by using PCR-based replicon typing. Phylogenetic grouping and multilocus sequence typing were determined for molecular typing of the plasmid-mediated AmpC (pAmpC) isolates.Of the isolates, 15 (1.6%) were identified as AmpC producers including 14 CMY-4- producing isolates and one DHA-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae . All AmpC-producing isolates co-expressed the broad-spectrum TEM-1...

Monitoring and Evaluation of the Agricultural and Rural Renewal Program in Algeria: case of the Ouarsenis area Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Tebani,Mohamed; Mederbal,Khalladi.
Abstract: In Algeria, agriculture continues to suffer from short-term strategies and is unsuitable for the needs of populations and rural areas. This study examines the evaluation of the Agricultural and Rural Program (ARRP) initiated in Algeria for the period (2009-2014). This work was carried in the Ouarsenis area located in the north-west of the country. It is based on regular monitoring on the ground of the rate of achievement of the targets foreseen. We concentrated our efforts on the projects financed by the main intervention funds of this program. The results achieved are far from the targets for the economic component, a situation mainly expressed by the low income of the rural population and the number of jobs created. However, an improvement in...

Primary antibiotic resistance and its relationship with cagA and vacA genes in Helicobacter pylori isolates from Algerian patients BJM
Bachir,Meryem; Allem,Rachida; Tifrit,Abedelkarim; Medjekane,Meriem; Drici,Amine El-Mokhtar; Diaf,Mustafa; Douidi,Kara Turki.
Abstract The epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori resistance to antibiotics is poorly documented in Africa and especially in Algeria. The aim of our study was to determine the antibiotic resistance rates, as well as its possible relationship with VacA and CagA virulence markers of isolates from Algerian patients. One hundred and fifty one H. pylori isolate were obtained between 2012 and 2015 from 200 patients with upper abdominal pain. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, rifampicin and tetracycline. Molecular identification of H. pylori and the detection of vacA and cagA genes were performed using specific primers. We found that H. pylori was present in 83.5% of collected...

Processus Gravitaires et Évaluation de la Stabilité des Pentes : Approches Géologique et Géotechnique. Application à la marge algérienne et à l'effondrement de l'aéroport de Nice en 1979 ArchiMer
Dan, Gabriela.
The present work consists of two areas of interest: the Algerian margin and the area affected by the 1979 Nice slide. The first scientific survey, MARADJA, took place in 2003 in order to characterize the Algerian margin from a morpho-sedimentary point of view and to map the presence of mass-wasting deposits. Based on other two scientific surveys, PRISMA and MARADJA 2, the mechanical and physical properties of the Algerian sediment were defined. The geotechnical properties were used to identify the triggering mechanisms of the observed mass-wasting deposits and to assess the present-day slope stability. The main results are: • The sedimentary processes are clearly influenced by the morphology of the margin, which is controlled by the tectonics. The...
